if u look at related videos. there is a 8 maybe 10 part total review of this that discloses the complete investigation. step by step. u come away thinking a top pilot simply gambled one too many times. there are a slew of factors. the klm had to airborne or go beyond their flying time and risk their jobs. think of urself riding down a street knowing there was traffic invisible to u, but u knew it was there. bad gamble, and yes…truely very sad.

who was the fault?

wat were the death toll?

i think the accident was caused by MANY factors, PAN AM not turning at the correct exit, KLM taking off w/o proper permission etc.
this documentary also seems to be more opinion-based, the “seconds from disaster” episode of this does a better job of telling the story based on the facts, in my opinion.

as most of the air crashes, the accident was caused by a combination of errors and NOT just a error alone. this case was not an exception… both pilots, weather, tower…anyway. it’s sad

It wasn’t impossible for a 747 turn at exit 3 and not so difficult…As the KLM made a 360 degrees turn at the end of the runway, Grubbs can made a 135 degrees turn at 3.

In this video seems that the poor Van Zanten took himself the decision to take off, when really he do this probably because the previous message by the tower eas disturbed and he hear ”ok for take off” when this was’nt. in this video seems that van zanten, a 50 years man whit a lot of experience want take off whit hurry and dont’listen to the tower voluntary.

This is horrible and so wrong. No pilot would just jump the gun and take off like that. We studied the transcript of the KLM pilot’s dialogue with the ATC, and it was a mistake made on both parts, along with the fog, low visibility, interruption from another ATC, and situations going on in the country earlier that day. This trailer looks hideous, as though the KLM pilot should’ve crashed.

Possible or not, it was stated as one of the causes for the crash.
You are right, since the airport was not really build to accommodate aircraft such as the 742s, if I can remember they used that airport because of a bomb thread at the one they were supposed to land.

m8, if you have a look at the aerodrome chart you yourself will see that vacating the runway at the third exit (c3) is pretty much impossible for an a/c the size of a 747. Please don’t just come to some random conclusion without thinking logically. Thankyou and RIP

this is mayday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

in my opinion the worst thing was made by PAN AM capitain Victor Grubbs. If he would turn at exit 3 instead of 4 this disaster never happen…he clearly heard 3 but with a personal stupid decision take 4

I don’t mean to take sides with anyone here, KLM’s captain’s ignorance is what caused this but I think its worth the time to note that the Pan Am Boeing was supposed to vacate at taxiway C3, he instead did it at C4.. still they can’t be blamed for something like that.

Pilots are know to have huge egos. Here’s a good example.

November 8th, 2008 at 11:19 am
father used to be a pilot and in his training they were taught NEVER to take of in fogy conditions or when visibility is below 800m
what he did is stupid but to be nicer silly i do not understand why he didn’t listen to radio control to get another clearance THEN take off the KLM pilot should be charged or put in jail(if he is still alive)
November 10th, 2008 at 6:17 am
why even take off in these conditions, its something that I just dont understand
November 12th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
it all start with poor flying controller…..
