Wether or not it’s needed, that is the beauty of innovation, use the technology to come up with better technologies for tomorrow. I am sure that system came from the military’s use of night vision way back which is available to the mainstream for hunting, ect……
Same with GPS, used/controlled by DOD, and now used by mainstream.
On more thing since I ran out of text space… What happens when two vehicles that are both equipped with this system are approaching each other from opposite angles. It would seem that the infra-red emitters that are set at high intensity and also a wide angle would blind the system on both receiving vehicles .. correct? If it were set up as a small screen then no big deal. But if it were done right with a HUD then it’d be a problem washing out the driver’s site completely = BAD. No can do?
The contrast in brightness between the tiny screen and the real darkness of outside would screw up you’re vision and make you rely more heavily on the tiny screen. I see that as a supreme negative. They need to integrate a true heads-up-display that more accurately blends with the real image of the road and only Hi-lights warmer objects such as humans, animals, and vehicles. Even the roadway would be enhanced since usually it is warmer than the ambient air or dirt/grass if it’s concrete.
nothing new its just becomming more common place to see Near infrared, thermal imaging and gen3 night vision light amplifiers on the market, all have their uses and place in th scheme of things,i have had the near IR imaging system in my cars since 1993 and they were all home made from off the shelf OEM items.the further you go into the IR band you cant use silicon sensors which only go down to 1280nM,but cryo cooled germainium extend into the micrometer range hence thermal imaging.
It’s the auto industry, everyone copies eachother at one point or another. Think about it. Mercedes-Benz was the first to put air bags in their cars, as well as ESP. And now every Lexus have air bags a ESP. So who copied who?
BMW are using Pathfinder by FLIR which is a military-grade infrared imaging camera that needs no extra light (can operate in complete darkness and give you exceptional vision) and Mercedes’ fairly crappy system (it can be dazzled by reflection and relies on there being an original source of light since it operates on light amplification using IR projection from the headlight cluster.

every lamp emits some infrared light. even you do that.
March 7th, 2007 at 5:40 pm
this would only work if the up coming cars don’t have infrared lamps

its really not that hard to see at night.
if you live in a city or the moon is out, its never that dark
why would staring at a tiny screen help you see better?? seriously people
March 27th, 2007 at 2:46 am
which models is this in? is it is the S550?
March 30th, 2007 at 10:59 am
Why do everyone think Lexus, mercedes and BMW was first to use night vision? It was Cadillac which was first in 2000 to it was discontinued in 2005

Would be better if they could project it onto the windscreen … and if it fails, well you can still see the normal view.
