On the Western Front from 1915 to 1917, the Allies and Germany were deadlocked in mortal combat over trench lines extending 500 milles from the Channel to Switzerland. The side who would overcome the obstacle of the trenches would win.

Human nature clearly reveals itself even in the most trying challenge of them all, war. People identify with their own, and it’s no surprise soldiers from the Western Front enjoyed a camaraderie. Had they been fighting Black or Asians it would have been a much less friendlier, more bile-ridden encounter.

It’s another example of the absurdity of the Great War on the western front. And indeed the absurdity of war itself.

What the fuck are you laughing at? If you ever spent a day in your life in that kind of misery you’d understand that combat veterans are often have greater feelings of kinship with enemy combat vets than with civilians at home because they feel that at least the enemy vets understand the hell they each went through.

I love how gentelmanly and courtious the soldiers could be in this war…the manner in which they were so congenial with each other at times was really something out of another age.
